Animals Need Your Kindness. Pledge to Help Them Today!
Every day, each of us makes choices: We can choose to hurt or help, to be cruel or kind.
This World Kindness Day (and all year round), you can show the world that your compassion extends to some of the most exploited and vulnerable among us: animals.
Read on to learn how the daily choices that you make at the dinner table, the grocery store, the mall, and everywhere in between can have a lifesaving impact on countless animals. And if you’re ready to take your kindness to the next level, click the button below to discover—and start acting—PETA’s Top 10 Ways to Be Kind to Animals.
Animals Are Not Ours to Experiment On
Right now, millions of animals are locked inside barren cages in laboratories across the country, subjected to cruel experiments that cause them immense pain and misery and that are irrelevant to human health. Monkeys are forced to become addicted to drugs, the skin of sheep and pigs is burned off, and rats’ spinal cords are crushed. Mice, guinea pigs, rabbits, and other animals are forced to swallow or inhale massive quantities of test substances, and chemicals are smeared in their eyes or on their skin. Dogs are poisoned with experimental drugs, and grotesque devices are implanted in rabbits’ bodies, all in the name of “health” and “science.”
You can make kind choices to help animals in laboratories—join PETA’s Action Team to learn how. Urge colleges and universities across the country to stop testing on animals. Shop with compassion by supporting cruelty-free companies that have progressive, comprehensive policies against animal testing—you’ll find them on PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies List.
Animals Are Not Ours to Eat
Animal agriculture destroys our planet, wreaks havoc on human health, and claims the lives of billions of animals every year. Here are some of the ways in which animals raised for food endure constant fear and torment:
- They’re often given so little space that they can’t even turn around or lie down comfortably.
- They are genetically manipulated to grow larger or to produce more milk and eggs than they would naturally. Some chickens grow so unnaturally large that their legs can’t support their outsized bodies and they suffer from starvation and dehydration when they can’t walk to reach food and water.
- More than 30 million cows suffer and die in the meat and dairy industries every year. When they’re still very young, many are branded (they’re burned with hot irons), dehorned (their horns are gouged out or cut or burned off), and castrated—all without painkillers.
- Cows on dairy farms are repeatedly artificially impregnated in order to keep their milk flowing and then traumatically separated from their newborn calves. When their bodies finally wear out, they’re sent to slaughterhouses to be killed.
The kindest choice that we can make for all animals is to go vegan. Refuse to support the industries that harm and kill billions of animals—including cows, chickens, pigs, and fish—every year. Delicious vegan food is available practically everywhere, and your favorite dishes can be veganized so that preparing them doesn’t harm animals. PETA can help you make the switch—we’ve got tips, tools, resources, and hundreds of free vegan recipes to get you started:
Animals Are Not Ours to Wear
Every year, millions of animals are killed in the clothing industry. Whether they originate on Chinese fur farms or in Indian slaughterhouses or Australian shearing sheds, an immeasurable amount of suffering goes into every fur-trimmed jacket, leather belt, and wool sweater. Eye-opening PETA exposés have shown the world how animals suffer so that the clothing industry can use mohair, down feathers, and exotic skins.
Vegan fashion is the kind, sustainable choice. Use our handy “How to Wear Vegan” guide to look good and feel confident in knowing that no animals suffered and died for your personal style. Pledge to stop wearing animal-derived fabrics, and urge companies to ditch fur:
Animals Are Not Ours to Use for Entertainment
Animals aren’t actors, spectacles to imprison and gawk at, or circus clowns. Yet thousands of them are forced to perform silly, confusing tricks under the threat of physical punishment; carted across the country inside cramped, stuffy boxcars and semi-truck trailers; kept chained or caged in barren, filthy enclosures; and separated from their families and friends—all for the sake of human entertainment. Many even lose their lives.
Here are a few kind choices that you can make to help animals used for entertainment:
- Refuse to visit SeaWorld and other establishments that imprison animals for profit.
- Avoid tourist activities that allow direct contact with animals, including photo ops, elephant rides, and “swim with dolphins” encounters.
- Never attend circuses that use animals.
Animals Are Not Ours to Abuse in Any Way
For wild animals and those with whom we share our homes, like cats and dogs, the kindness of humans can be a lifesaver—literally. That’s why you should never be silent when you witness abuse or come across an animal in distress. To help curb the animal-overpopulation crisis, always have your animal companions spayed or neutered. Always dispose of trash and recyclable goods properly, because litter kills animals. Being kind means leaving wild animals in peace so that they can pursue their own desires and fulfill their own needs, not crowding around them for “selfies” or disturbing them in other ways.
