I strongly urge Sanofi to join the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies in banning the scientifically worthless forced swim test. I won’t buy any of its over-the-counter products until it does so.

Many scientists now agree that this experiment, which forces terrified rodents to swim for their lives, has nothing at all to do with the complexities that fuel human depression or the mechanisms by which antidepressants work.

Your competitors—including Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, GlaxoSmithKline, AbbVie Inc., Roche, AstraZeneca, Novo Nordisk A/S, Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, and Bristol Myers Squibb—have already stopped performing this experiment. I urge Sanofi to do the same.

In the past, Sanofi has acted swiftly to end outmoded and cruel practices. Its decision to stop using animals in sales training is praiseworthy. I’m hopeful that now, as then, your company will rise to the occasion.

The tide has turned. Please stop using the forced swim test.
