Stop Funding the National Primate Research Centers

For decades, the seven National Primate Research Centers have burned through billions of tax dollars—while tormenting monkeys with deadly infections, electro-ejaculation, and snake fear tests. On top of the torment, they’ve been caught in egregious failures—like scalding monkeys to death in cage washers. These are not slips; they’re proof these labs can’t even meet the minimal standards required of them.

They’ve produced agony, not cures. Cruel, outdated, scientifically bankrupt—keeping them open is a scandal hiding in plain sight.

I’m writing to urge you to cut funding for the seven National Primate Research Centers (NPRCs), failed institutions that collectively receive nearly $100 million in taxpayer dollars each year in grants from the National Institutes of Health just to cover operating expenses. Ending these P51 grants would represent significant savings for taxpayers that could be applied to far more effective, non-animal research that has proven to be of greater benefit to humans. The NPRCs were founded in the 1960s and charged with developing primate “models” for human disease. In 60 years, those models have failed to make significant strides toward eradicating, or even treating, some of humanity’s most pressing health problems—cancer and HIV, for instance. They have failed for a simple reason: Monkeys are not miniature humans. The NPRCs are functionally irrelevant. In 2015, the New England National Primate Research Center closed. It’s time to pull the plug on the remaining seven. This will save taxpayers hundreds of millions and allow for the advancement of research based on sound, non-animal science.
