Ukraine Updates
February 24, 2025

Since just days after the war in Ukraine started in February 2022, PETA Germany and its partners have been risking it all to save animals in need. From flooding to missile strikes, Global Compassion Fund–backed teams have risked it all to help Ukraine’s animals. Meet some of the beautiful souls who now have a second chance at life because of your support.

February 24, 2025, marks three years of war in Ukraine—and that means three years full of fear and danger for the animals whose homes became a warzone. A team of courageous and kind people from Animal Rescue Kharkiv are on the ground to help the displaced, terrified, and wounded animals have a new chance at life in Germany thanks to PETA support.
How This PETA-Backed Team in Ukraine Is Helping Animals Escape the Warzone
Since the beginning of the war, the PETA-backed team has rescued 22,000 animals and counting. Each rescued animal is quarantined for months while rescuers work tirelessly to collect the necessary paperwork, treat the animal’s wounds, and help the traumatized animals trust humans again. Some of the rescued animals are transported to Germany to meet their new families when everything is in order.

One little dog, James, was found terrified in Pokrovsk. The small city is a significant hub for Ukraine because of its coal and transportation connections—and those key components also make it a target for Russian forces.

The city is constantly under fire, making it dangerous for volunteers to enter. Thankfully, ARK’s team was able to help evacuate James.

James and several other animals paired with new families thanks to the PETA-Supported rescue team will have a second chance at life free from the war.
