Our Work in Jordan

December 17, 2024

Gentle donkeys are hit and whipped as they struggle to haul tourists up 900 crumbling stone steps to the famed monastery in Petra, Jordan. The donkeys may be sick, exhausted, and thirsty, but they’re forced to work no matter what. Thankfully, a team of veterinarians, backed by PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, helps hundreds of suffering donkeys and camels each week. Learn more about how our Global Compassion Fund supports the Petra Veterinary Clinic and how you can help donkeys and camels in Petra.

Thirsty and Sometimes Sick, Donkeys and Camels in Petra Must Work Every Day

Thanks to PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, hundreds of exploited animals receive veterinary care for colic, lameness, and other ailments every week. Without treatment, these conditions cause immense suffering and can even lead to the animals’ deaths—but we are there to help at no cost to the owners at all.

The free care that the Petra Veterinary Clinic provides is often the only way the animals forced to carry tourists will receive the help they need.

The Petra Veterinary Staff Is Encouraging a Kinder Future

As part of their educational and awareness program on animal welfare in the region, the Petra Veterinary Clinic staff leads workshops in local schools focused on empathy for animals. Team members visit schools in the villages of Umm Sayhoun and Beidha. They teach lessons on the essential freedoms that should be ensured for animals and distribute coloring books and educational materials to children, who eagerly fill them out.

Recently, Petra Veterinary Clinic staff noted how impressed they were by the students’ eagerness to share what they remembered from previous visits—and even principals and teachers were touched by the workshop’s animal rights message. One teacher motivated the students by announcing that anyone who memorized the content of the booklet would be rewarded with five extra marks for the term and recognition during the morning assembly.
