In the Middle East, PETA’s Global Compassion Fund Gave Dogs Shelter From the Cold

In a region of the world where animals and the individuals who care for them are persecuted and even prosecuted, PETA’s Global Compassion Fund has provided vital support to brave rescuers who risk their own safety to save animals from a terrible end.

In a remote area of the Middle East, volunteers created a very basic dog shelter to take in unwanted and homeless dogs and protect them from lives of privation and cruelty. But with negligible resources, the rescuers struggled to construct safe, comfortable housing, and they had no way to prevent torrential rains from turning outdoor spaces into deep, muddy pits. Every attempt to play, exercise, or relieve themselves left the canine residents soaking wet and filthy.

Outdoor areas

PETA Germany learned of the animals’ plight and stepped in to help. With funding from Global Compassion Fund donors, the shelter was able to make meaningful improvements, including building a sturdy structure where the dogs can live and rest safely.

Indoor area

Rescuers built wooden bunk-style beds topped with soft mattresses, giving dogs a clean, cozy place to sleep.

Kennels in the outdoor area

Workers repaired and reinforced the outdoor kennels, then converted an unused structure into 10 additional kennels with wooden floors and space for socialization.

Volunteers also built a drainage system that redirects rainwater away from recreation areas, helping dogs stay drier and cleaner during the rainy season. Concrete in key areas and large, raised sandboxes give the dogs protected space outdoors during stretches of inclement weather.

The shelter’s dedicated founders have more projects in the works that will make this safe haven a cheerful refuge for the dogs they are determined to protect.
