Our Work in Romania
November 15, 2024
In a single month, PETA Germany’s Romanian partner, Eduxanima, helped hundreds of dogs and cats across the country, thanks to support from PETA’s Global Compassion Fund. The team sterilized 132 animals and provided medical care, deworming medicine, vaccinations, dog houses, harnesses, food, and other essential care to dozens more. The team also helped 12 companion animals get adopted into homes.
Homeless Animals in Romania Suffer
In Romania, an estimated 600,000 homeless dogs and thousands of cats struggle to survive on the streets, where they’re vulnerable to traffic, attacks from other animals or cruel humans, extreme weather conditions, and dangerous diseases. PETA Helps Romania is an essential program that tackles the country’s drastic homeless-animal crisis by providing free spay/neuter surgeries, facilitating humane education in Romanian schools, and working with lawmakers to create public policy to better protect animals. The program also alleviates animals’ suffering through life-saving operations and treatments, sturdy doghouses, free veterinary care, and more.
Here are just some of the animals Eduxanima helped in a month.
35 Dogs and 10 Cats Received Flea and Tick Treatments in Corbu
The team rushed to the rural village of Corbu to aid Tudor—a local man who had taken in 35 dogs and ten cats from the streets—with a massive flea infestation on his property, causing the animals to suffer enormously. Romania’s sweltering summers often cause flea and tick infestations to rise in rural areas like Corbu, and Tudor’s home was no exception. The team jumped into action, disinfecting the entire facility and providing medical treatment for each animal.
A Kitten Found in the Garbage Was Treated For a Severe Eye Condition
In the village of Bălilești, a local animal rescuer called for help when she found a month-old kitten crudely abandoned in the garbage. The animal was suffering from a painful infection in one eye, which was protruding from the eye socket, swollen, and full of pus. The team successfully treated the kitten’s eye condition and gave her deworming medicine and vaccinations. Now, she’s healthy, safe, and lovingly cared for at the home of her rescuer.
An Abandoned Dog With an Ingrown Collar Received a Life-Saving Procedure
A woman in the town ofZărnești called for urgent help for a dog with a painfully ingrown collar that caused her to have a severely infected wound on her neck. Though she desperately needed care, the abandoned dog—living in a rainwater drainage pipe—was terrified and withdrawn, only coming out when no one was around.
After a few attempts, the team was able to catch the dog, anesthetize her, and give her first aid on the spot. They then took her to a veterinary facility for neutering and further recovery. The once-suffering dog is now off the streets and in the safe, loving home of the woman who called Eduxanima for help.
