Our Work in the U.S.
April 3, 2026
You’ve probably heard about the catastrophic storms that just raged through the Hawaiian Islands. In some areas, floodwaters rose above residents’ knees. The relentless downpour has destroyed homes, businesses, and infrastructure, and left animals fleeing for their lives in its wake.
Among those hit hardest are the feathered residents of Trooper’s Chicken Rescue, a sanctuary dedicated to giving chickens a safe and peaceful home. As waters rose with frightening speed, the sanctuary’s team sprang into emergency mode, focusing every effort on protecting the chickens and getting them out of harm’s way.
PETA Sends a Lifeline for Animals in Crisis
Critical help arrived through PETA’s Global Compassion Fund (GCF).
Thanks to a PETA GCF grant, Trooper’s Chicken Rescue has the crucial support it needs for emergency flood repairs and disaster relief. Beyond immediate aid, PETA has also pledged to help the sanctuary launch a humane education program, helping address the root causes of cruelty that put animals at risk in the first place.
Rescue and Prevention Go Hand in Hand
While the storm has forced the sanctuary to focus on urgent disaster response, the need for prevention remains clear.
Many of the chickens at Trooper’s were rescued from cockfighting, a violent underground industry in which humans force birds into pits and provoke them to fight—often to the death. Some birds arrived with painful injuries, while others were found dumped on the side of the road once they were no longer considered useful. These birds survived extreme cruelty before finding refuge at Trooper’s, underscoring the need for education and prevention to end their suffering.

By promoting compassion and respect for animals, PETA’s humane education initiatives can help reduce the number of chickens who need rescue in the first place.
Building a Kinder Future for Animals Worldwide
Through TeachKind, PETA’s humane education program, empathy is reaching communities around the globe. With hands-on activities, classroom lessons, field trips, and more, children learn that chickens are intelligent, social individuals. Understanding animals as thinking, feeling beings helps dismantle the attitudes that allow cruelty to continue.
PETA’s Global Compassion Fund makes this lifesaving work possible—and it’s all powered by caring supporters like YOU.
