Since just days after the war in Ukraine started in February 2022, PETA Germany and its partners have been risking it all to save animals in need. From flooding to missile strikes, Global Compassion Fund–backed teams have risked it all to help Ukraine’s animals. Meet some of the beautiful souls who now have a second chance at life because of your support.

Mryia, the cow, was gravely injured. A festering wound on her side and a severely injured udder, probably caused by shrapnel, likely would have killed her if a compassionate soldier hadn’t found her. The soldier brought Mriya food each day and tended to her as best she could. Once Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK) heard of Mriya’s plight, the PETA-supported team leaped to action to save her life.

Mriya Was Rescued Thanks to a PETA-Backed Team
When ARK’s team arrived to help, the buzz of drones circling overhead emphasized the need to act urgently. Mriya, however, was frozen with fear and refused to move. With lots of coaxing, the rescue team led Mriya to the trailer step by step, and she was ready for evacuation.

Thankfully, the PETA-backed team safely got Mriya, several goats, and a litter of puppies found on the destroyed property to the team’s sanctuary. Mriya is now recovering from her injuries and enjoying many treats fed to her by hand.
