Ukraine Updates
August 26, 2025
For animals left behind, the violence in Ukraine is terrifying. Explosions shatter the quiet of once-familiar neighborhoods, buildings collapse, and the streets they once roamed are suddenly filled with smoke and debris.

Homeless dogs and cats cower from the sound of shelling, confused and alone, with no way of understanding why their world has become so dangerous. In these desperate moments, a PETA-supported team is often their only chance for food, shelter, and safety.
From native birds living in the warzone to animal companions who have lost their beloved families due to violence, Animal Rescue Kharkiv helps them all. Learn more about the 464 animals they rescued in just one month, and how you can support this vital work.
Meet a Few of This Month’s Rescues
Among those recently saved were several species of wild birds, including this young white stork injured during the fighting.

Thanks to Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s tireless care, they recovered, were rehabilitated, and released back to their homes.

Dozens of dogs and cats whose families either perished in the war or were forced to leave them behind during evacuations were discovered in abandoned homes or hiding in rubble.

The team rescued more than 240 dogs and cats in just one month, and either transferred them to local shelter groups or to ARK’s PETA-supported refuge: the PEACE Sanctuary.

The PEACE Sanctuary Is a Safe Haven for More Than One Thousand Recovering Animals
ARK is tirelessly working to complete the PEACE Sanctuary, where animals can safely heal. Although it is not finished yet, the sanctuary is already home to more than a thousand animal refugees. Nearly a hundred dogs are transported to the sanctuary every week, and they love all the space they have to play.

Each of the more than one thousand animals currently at the PEACE Sanctuary is a survivor of war, now given a second chance at life.
