Ukraine Updates
November 12, 2025
For animals left behind, the violence in Ukraine is terrifying. Explosions shatter the quiet of once-familiar neighborhoods, buildings collapse, and the streets they once roamed are suddenly filled with smoke and debris.
Animal Rescue Kharkiv and the animals of Ukraine lost a beloved friend and selfless protector in a recent attack. Although the full extent of Tetiana’s impact can’t be measured, more than 200 animals are alive today because she risked everything to help them.
Remembering Tetiana: Animal Rescue Kharkiv’s Compassionate, Determined Volunteer
For a year and a half, Tetiana worked closely with the PETA-backed rescue team Animal Rescue Kharkiv in Chasiv Yar, Ukraine. Before attacks in the city grew more frequent and deadly, Tetiana guided the rescue team to homes where she knew abandoned animals were living and helped evacuate them.

When frequent attacks made it too dangerous for the rescuers to reach certain parts of the city, Tetiana went by herself. She rounded up the frightened, starving cats and dogs and sheltered them in her home and in the evacuated houses next door. Then, she would help move them to a place where Animal Rescue Kharkiv could safely reach them and assist them in escaping the war zone.

Tetiana helped hundreds of animals evacuate, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave her home and the animals who remained in the ravaged city. Even as the threat of Russian attacks increased, she stayed. Tetiana was killed during a shelling in November 2025.
