Since just days after the war in Ukraine started in February 2022, PETA Germany and its partners have been risking it all to save animals in need. From flooding to missile strikes, Global Compassion Fund–backed teams have risked it all to help Ukraine’s animals. Meet some of the beautiful souls who now have a second chance at life because of your support.
Signs of war surrounded Animal Rescue Kharkiv (ARK), backed by PETA’s Global Compassion Fund, on their way to a farm where dozens of animals needed to be evacuated. A plume of smoke rose in the distance, wreckage was strewn across the road, yet the team pushed onward. With the road too unsafe to navigate by vehicle, ARK rescuers had to walk half a day, knowing that every second could mean the difference between life and death.
Smoke, Wreckage, and a Race Against Time
When the PETA-backed rescue team arrived at the farm, they knew they had to move quickly. There could be a drone strike at any moment. One by one, the rescuers ushered as many animals as they could into the safety of a barn to help shield them from potential attacks. Then, with everyone safely inside, the rescue team loaded the cats and dogs into their truck and began the harrowing escape to Sumy.
A Tiny Puppy, 54 Other Survivors, and a Lifeline of Hope
Among the 55 animals ARK’s team rescued was a tiny puppy, too young to understand the horrors unfolding around them. But this pup—along with dozens of other animals—now has a second chance at life. Volunteers in Sumy are working tirelessly to provide them all with the care they need.
